Kunekune Pigs

About KuneKune Pigs

Kunekune are a rare heritage pig from New Zealand, known for their grazing ability, friendly temperaments, and rich marbled meat. Our Kunekune are registered through the American Kunekune Pig Society (AKKPS) and grow to about 250 pounds.

Our Story

We own a large field, we have tons of kids, and we are trying to become more self-sufficient. In 2019, we learned that Kunekune pigs can be raised mostly on grass, they are not aggressive, and they provide top-quality pork. They don't get as big as commercial hogs and they take about two years to grow to butcher weight, but they're easier to keep fenced in, we're not worried about them around our kids, and they were the cutest swine we'd ever laid eyes on! That pretty much sealed the deal for us until we realized how much they cost...

But we're thrifty. We shopped around and finally bought four piglets for $50 each. We were excited to get such a great deal. We made the plunge, bought the pigs, and got to work. Then we were confronted with a hard truth. As we started to do more research, observe our pigs grow, and post pictures of them on Kunekune Facebook groups, we realized we had not received purebred Kunekune piglets. Instead, they were Kunekune/Julianna. We learned that this happens to a lot of people. We were bummed! But this wasn't the end of the world. We learned how to raise pigs, we built good infrastructure, and we learned how to butcher. The mixed-breed pigs were harder to contain, the boars become aggressive, and the piglets weren't worth as much, but these downsides only strengthened our resolve to buy registered stock. Slowly we transitioned back to Plan A, sold the mixed breeds, and forked out the cash for actual registered Kunekune pigs.

Our goal is to sell most of the piglets from every litter in order to pay for our costs so that eventually, we will be raising our own pork for free. We've had only good experiences with Kunekune pigs so far and we are ready to start spreading the Kunekune gospel across Kitsap County.

If you're considering Kunekune pigs, e-mail us. We would love to answer any questions you have, we would love to have you come over and look at our farm, and of course we will try to sell you a piglet. We have learned a lot over the years that we would be happy to pass on to you, such as when to breed, how to set up shelters, what vaccinations are needed, how to prepare the sows for farrowing, how to register with AKKPS, how to castrate, and how to butcher.

Rougarou

Rougarou was our first Kunekune pig and caused us to fall in love with the breed. He was born in July 2020. He is a black/ginger AKKPS Tuahuru boar, registration number 12850. He is very calm, sweet, and quiet. He loves to munch on grass and nap in the sun. He weighs approximately 275 pounds.

Samson

Samson is a double-wattled Tutaki boar, born in March 2021. He is registered as AKKPS 22380. He is a calm boar and gifts some of his piglets with a beautiful white band. Having a second boar makes it possible for us to offer breeding pairs for sale. He weighs about 200 pounds.

Ginger

Ginger is our largest and most prolific sow, born in October 2020. She is ginger/black, double-wattled, and registered as AKKPS 15880. She loves to roll on her side for belly rubs. She carries on the Wilsons Gina sow line. She weighs about 250 pounds.

Delilah

Delilah is our newest sow, brought in to improve our herd quality and diversity. She was born in May 2024. We plan to let her farrow her first litter in fall 2025. She is black with white spots, double-wattled, and registered as AKKPS 47325. She brings the Tapeka sow line to our farm.

Joeline

Joeline was born on our farm in March 2023 from Samson and Ginger. She had her first litter of ten piglets from Rougarou in August 2024, and proved to be a great sow. She has a beautiful ginger coat and is registered as AKKPS 32557. She carries on the Wilsons Gina sow line.
